Case StudyTrident Displays uses Elo TouchSystems touchscreens for interactive hospital bedside terminalsAugust 2004 - Trident Displays, one of the UK's leading suppliers of LCD, EL and Plasma Flat Panel displays, LCD interfaces and single board computers, is using Elo TouchSystems touch technology in its latest systems to provide UK hospitals with interactive bedside terminals. The Trident Tele-Call Patient Terminals enable hospital patients to access a wide range of multimedia and telephony services via a touchscreen from the bedside.
Tele-Call terminals can be mounted on an articulated arm with internal cable and single mating connector to provide a movable touchscreen display that patients can use with a minimum of fuss. Trident's Tele-Call Patient Terminals are based around Elo TouchSystems' SecureTouch surface wave 15in LCD monitors that provide crystal clear 24bit colour resolution display and feature a shatterproof, coating-free glass overlay that provides durable and scratch resistant operation. Elo's surface wave touch technology offers stable "drift free" operation for fast touch response that is always accurate whether operated by finger, gloved hand or soft stylus. The surface wave technology is also sensitive to touch pressure being able to recognise location and amount of pressure applied. Warren Kressinger-Dunn, Trident Displays' Director commented, "The Elo touchscreens offer a perfect solution to our requirements providing a crisp, bright image with truly responsive touch operation. The screens offer an ideal solution for hospital interactive bedside terminals meeting stringent medical specifications. In addition, they can be cleaned with a number of different solvents, are impact resistant, optically clear and, most importantly, can be operated by users when wearing gloves." He continued, "In the course of developing the Tele-Call terminals, Elo's technical team worked closely with Trident to ensure the touchscreen driver worked with the system and solved a tricky gasketing problem along the way. Elo also produced custom cables for the project and sourced specialist connectors, supplying all these solutions packaged together as a kit ." "In all, the product delivery and supply and the technical and commercial support were very good." he concluded. Trident Displays also uses Elo TouchSystems' SecureTouch touchscreens in its interactive payment terminals that provide effective solutions to the problem of accepting customer payments in a variety of environments. The Trident Payment terminals are used in conjunction with the Tele-Call Patient Terminals to enable hospital patients to pay for the various pay-per-use services offered by the bedside systems. Trident's payment terminal is a complete kiosk hardware payment system that combines with a suitable software back-end application configuration to deliver an effective way for processing customer payments. The payment terminal is designed for flexibility with modular construction to allow for hardware customisation depending on the various possible transactions required, e.g. coins, notes and/or credit/debit cards. Once again the terminal is based around Elo TouchSystems' high brightness 15in TFT display with SecureTouch surface wave shatterproof touchscreen providing a simple interface for patients to pay for access to additional services on the Tele-Call bedside terminals.
