Elo Adds New Touch Technology to LCD Multifunction Touchmonitor

Breakthrough Acoustic Pulse Recognition (APR) Now Available on 1529L

EElo Adds New Touch Technology to LCD Multifunction TouchmonitorSeptember 2006 - Elo TouchSystems, the global leader in touch technology and a business of Tyco Electronics Corporation, has added its latest groundbreaking acoustic pulse recognition (APR) touch technology to the already versatile 1529L 15" LCD multifunction touchmonitor. In addition to APR, the 1529L includes options for an integrated three-track magnetic stripe reader (MSR), 2 x 20 vacuum fluorescent rear-facing customer display and a biometric fingerprint recognition device. Typical applications for the 1529L with APR include point-of-sale, point-of-service, loyalty systems and kiosk information systems.

APR: We're Listening
"APR touch technology operates by listening for a touch," says Elo Director of Product Management, Michael Bartelmess. "A touch at each position on the glass generates a unique sound. Four tiny transducers attached to the edges of the touchscreen glass pick up the sound of the touch. The sound is then digitised by the controller and compared to a list of prerecorded sounds for every position on the glass. The cursor position is instantly updated by the touch location."

A Cost-effective Combination of the Best in Touch
According to Bartelmess, Elo's APR touch technology is more cost-effective because it uses a simple table lookup method instead of requiring powerful and expensive signal processing hardware like previous attempts to capture sound. This means it is not economically limited to very large displays.

"What's more, APR utilises the best features of Elo's wide range of touch technologies. It combines the ultimate in optical quality, durability and stability of surface wave and infrared with the excellent dragging properties of surface capacitive," Bartelmess continues. "It also has the advantages of resistive technology - stylus, gloved hand and fingernail activation, and low cost. APR works with water and other contaminants on the screen, is not affected by surrounding metal or poor grounding, can be scaled from PDA to 42" displays and provides palm rejection during signature capture."

An Award-winning Design
Acting as the perfect host for Elo's breakthrough APR touch technology, the 1529L 15" LCD multifunction touchmonitor was designed for touch from the ground up. "Because connectivity is incorporated within the touchmonitor, we have reduced the number of power bricks and eliminated cable confusion," says Elo Product Manager Ignace Verhamme. "Optional peripherals for the 1529L touchmonitor include a three-track MSR, 2 x 20 vacuum fluorescent rear-facing customer display and a biometric fingerprint recognition device. All are available with a choice of Elo's popular touch technologies: IntelliTouch surface wave, AccuTouch five-wire resistive, CarrollTouch infrared and now also Acoustic Pulse Recognition."
