Press Release

Acoustic Pulse Recognition (APR) Launch at CeBIT07

Breakthrough New Touch Technology

Hannover (CeBIT), March 15, 2007 – Elo TouchSystems, the world leader in touch technology and a division of Tyco Electronics Corporation, announces the first range of products which utilize the Acoustic Pulse Recognition technology. This technology is a completely new and unique way of sensing touches on a display and combines the benefits of touch technologies into one. Elo introduces APR on their 15" desktop touchmonitors, thus combining all the benefits of Elo's design with the advantages of this breakthrough touch technology.

Combining Touch with Sound
APR technology works by recognizing each unique sound made by touching a different point on the screen. It then compares the sound with a table of pre-recorded sounds, thus telling the computer where the screen was touched. Since APR does not require powerful and expensive signal processing hardware, it is more cost effective and not economically limited to very large displays. APR is suited for any size of screen.
APR touch technology first debuted last year, and offers the finest choice for a variety of needs, since it combines all the best features of touch technology– perfect for those customers who need features from two or more distinct technologies offered in one.

Combined benefits of APR
APR is particularly suited for POS applications since it offers high-quality optics, is durable and stable, continues functioning even when scratched, and can be activated by any stylus, be it a fingernail, glove, finger, pen, or credit card. Finally, POS applications can have an all glass touch technology providing an extremely high optics, with no wear and while functioning with any stylus. In addition, it is resistant to water and other contaminants on the screen, and provides palm rejection during signature capture.

APR Technology on Elo's Touchmonitors
Elo offers APR technology on their 1529L and 1515L 15" LCD desktop monitors. Acting as the perfect host for Elo's breakthrough APR touch technology, the 1529L 15˝ LCD multifunction touchmonitor was designed for touch from the ground up. Because connectivity is incorporated within the touchmonitor, the number of power bricks is reduced and cable confusion eliminated. Optional peripherals for the 1529L touchmonitor include a three-track MSR, 2 x 20 vacuum fluorescent rear-facing customer display, and a biometric fingerprint recognition device. At CeBIT, APR is also introduced on the 1515L, the 15" LCD touchmonitor from the family of entry-level touchmonitors. Other sizes and form factors will follow soon.

A Touch Solution for Every Application
Luc Mergeay, Managing Director of Elo EMEA: “Elo has always been a pioneer in touch ever since we invented this solution decades ago. We never rested on our laurels but we continued to invest in innovation. As a result we have today over 50 active patents, and touchmonitors and touch solutions installed all over the world. Now, with APR technology, Elo can offer a combination of benefits that has not been achieved before with any single touch technology. We are proud to bring APR to market since it will change the face of the industry considerably”.

Elo’s customers recognize this pioneering spirit and value the quality they receive.  Elo's customer Info U, the sixth largest retailer in France has already installed a number of Elo's touchmonitors with APR. The technical manager of Info U says, “APR has already shown fantastic results today, especially in terms of clarity, contrast and touch sensitivity."
