Tyco Electronics’ Elo Touchsystems Shows Future Touch Technologies at Retail Solutions 2008

Future retail technologies, large widescreen panels, touchcomputers and best sellers for retail sector on show

June 2008 - Tyco Electronics’ Elo TouchSystems is showing innovative and exciting new technologies for retail applications at the Retail Solutions exhibition (24 to 26 June, ExCeL, London) alongside its latest large-size widescreen touchmonitors for digital signage applications. The company is also exhibiting new touchcomputers and its best-selling desktop products for retail point of purchase, point of service use.

Touch has multiple futures in next generation Windows
Elo is demonstrating a new multi-touch technology as shown recently in the US at the presentation of Microsoft’s next generation Windows operating system with multi-touch support. As a global player in touch technology, Elo’s state-of-the-art R&D capabilities and mass production facilities make the company well positioned to exploit new opportunities in the mass user market and its proven infrared technology is capable of being adapted to deliver reliable, high sensitivity multi-touch functionality in high-volume desktop and kiosk monitors. With touch now becoming the standard user interface in public venues such as self-service and point of sale, Elo anticipates that multi-touch will become ubiquitous on desktop, notebook, mobile PCs and virtually all touch enabled devices. The company has already developed a working multi-touch technology and is intent on being ready to deploy products as soon as multi-touch OS support is available. In retail markets multi-touch is likely to find applications in photo kiosks and similar fields.

New Power-over-Ethernet touch display
Also being shown is a new 12.1 inch desktop touch display that uses innovative Power-over-Ethernet (PoE) technology to eliminate the need for local power cabling. Designed to meet the requirements of point of purchase, point of service and similar retail applications, the new PoE display provides all power, touch, video and audio functions via a standard Ethernet network cable. The 12.1 inch desktop PoE touch stations add flexibility to the deployment options for many retailers who need to place price checkers, digital advertising and similar modules throughout their stores often in positions where mains power is not available.

Widescreen chassis touchmonitors for interactive digital signage
Elo TouchSystems has added four new widescreen chassis touchmonitors to its line up with 20, 22, 26 and 32 inch models. These combine high‑performance LCD panels with industry- leading touch technologies to create a new family of large‑screen, wide‑aspect open‑frame touchmonitors. The 2039L, 2239L, 2639L and 3239L touchmonitors are designed specifically for use in public venues such as retail self‑service, point of information kiosks and interactive digital signage for wayfinders, advertising and product demonstrations.

The large‑screen, wide‑aspect displays include a choice of Elo TouchSystems touch technologies, such as IntelliTouch surface wave, surface capacitive and the innovative Acoustic Pulse Recognition (APR). Elo touch technologies provide stable, durable touch options that are resistant to scratches and liquids and can be activated in a variety of ways. Even bigger widescreen touchmonitors will be developed as market trends drive towards ever larger and more impressive in-store interactive displays.

Extended range of touchcomputers
Three new models of integrated touchcomputers are being exhibited at Retail Solutions. Ideal for use in hospitality and point of sale applications, Elo’s fan-free and silent touchcomputers integrate powerful computing capabilities with full connectivity in the footprint of a monitor that can fit virtually anywhere.

The 17A2 model is an ultra-compact 17" all-in-one computer with optional user installable peripherals such as barcode scanner, magnetic stripe reader, customer display and biometric fingerprint reader.

The 15A1 model, a 15" touchcomputer, expands the high profile family of reliable, easy-to-integrate multifunction touch solutions designed to meet the requirements of systems integrator or value-added reseller.

Elo will also be previewing its latest 15A2 touchcomputer which features the same design, computing platform and user-installable accessories as the 17A2, making it ideal for retail and POS use with its flexible design (wall-mount or desktop, high or low stand, vertical or horizontal display), connectivity (USB, serial, Ethernet and cash drawer ports) for maximum flexibility and all of Elo’s “designed for touch” features built-in.

For maximum flexibility, all Elo touchcomputers can be supplied with a choice of touch technologies including surface wave and APR, the company’s most recent technology development that combines the benefits of other major touch technologies. An all glass technology that works with fingernail touch (unlike surface wave and capacitive), offers the same optical quality as surface wave and features excellent dragging performance like capacitive, APR is also impervious to liquids and offers true flat screen capability making it ideal for use in bar top applications among many others.

Additional highlights at the Elo stand
Elo is also exhibiting a broad range of touch products including the best-selling 1515L and 1529L desktop touchmonitors that are widely used in retail applications. These 15" space-saving touchmonitors are “designed for touch” with Elo’s proven expertise and reliability already built in. They can function as a desktop or wall-mounted unit and the display is factory sealed against dirt and dust. Styled to be attractive from all angles, the monitors are available with a choice of Elo touch technologies.

The 1529L includes options for an integrated three-track magnetic stripe reader (MSR), rear-facing customer display and a biometric fingerprint recognition device, while the 1515L is an entry-level model with an optional field-installable MSR. Typical applications in the retail sector include point of sale, point of service, loyalty systems and kiosk information systems.

The company will also be showing examples of its capabilities in developing custom solutions for major retail projects.

Tyco Electronics’ Elo TouchSystems is exhibiting on stand H26.
