Tyco Electronics’ Elo Touchsystems Shows New Power-Over-Ethernet Display for Retail Applications

New zero-client technology POS multi-function touch station eliminates power cabling

June 2008 - Tyco Electronics’ Elo TouchSystems presents a new 12.1 inch desktop touch display that uses new Power-over-Ethernet (PoE) technology to eliminate the need for local power cabling by providing all power from a standard Ethernet network connection. Designed to meet the requirements of retail applications, Elo’s new 12.1 inch desktop PoE touch stations add flexibility to the deployment options for many retailers who need to place price checkers, digital advertising and similar modules throughout their stores often in positions where mains power is not available.

Low power zero-client design
Incorporating a low power design featuring PoE zero-client technology, the new POS multi-function touch station eliminates the need for a local power supply, resulting in lower costs wherever deployments are made. With this unique design concept, retailers can place a variety of POS devices wherever they are needed without having to provide separate electrical power – screen placement can now be determined on maximum impact instead of power availability allowing retailers to combine the benefits of digital signage with the convenience of point of service applications.

Commenting on the new PoE touch display, Elo TouchSystems’ product manager, Chris Lowet, said, “The retail environment is ever changing and the speed of that change is ever increasing with customers demanding better value and more convenience in their shopping experiences. To answer these challenges, retailers increasingly look to technology to provide the innovative solutions they require. The Elo TouchSystems network powered multi-function and multimedia touch station incorporating power-over-Ethernet is an answer to that challenge.”

Features include a single Ethernet cable connection for all power, video, touch and audio functions; higher brightness, better contrast and wider viewing angle than most 12.1 inch LCDs; built-in speakers located in the display head; single line barcode scanner; and “Designed for touch” features such as a stable tilt base.

The Ethernet connection cable is hidden from the user’s view – the preferred option for public access venues – and all controls are on the side of the unit rather than the front with lockout available to prevent tampering. Additional features encompass multi-lingual on-screen display (OSD) with extras including speaker volume, removable base and VESA mounting option as well as diagnostic LEDs for touch and video.

The new 12.1 inch desktop PoE touch display is available with AccuTouch five-wire resistive technology that can be activated with fingernails, gloves, credit cards or any stylus. For the ultimate in optical quality, the display can also be supplied with IntelliTouch surface wave touch technology.

This product will be available on project basis only.
