Enclosure Configurations
Desktop
Custom desktop enclosures
are typically engineered by making the required modifications to a standard
LCD or CRT display desktop platform. Desktop configurations are preferred
for point-of-sale, office automation, and many healthcare, medical, and
machine control applications. Custom colors and custom painting are the
most popular custom desktop solutions. Another custom solution involves
modifying a desktop design to meet additional certifications or regulatory
requirements, especially for many medical and industrial applications.
The custom desktop enclosure is usually the least expensive type of custom
enclosure, with the shortest design and delivery cycle.
Rear-Mount
Custom rear mount
enclosures are designed to be mounted from the rear of a cutout or opening.
This is the preferred configuration for most kiosk applications and many
machine-control applications. The front bezel is typically metal or plastic.
The price for a rear mount solution varies with the design complexity
and the construction material.
Panel-Mount/Front-Mount
 Custom panel mount
enclosures are designed to be mounted through a cutout or opening. This
is the preferred configuration for process control and most machine control
applications. The front panel is typically metal, aluminum, or stainless
steel. The panel mount provides a seal between the touchscreen and front
panel, and between the front panel and the mounting location. The rear
part of the enclosure is usually metal, with ventilation slots for cooling.
The price for a panel mount solution varies with the design complexity
and the construction material. Design cycle and lead time also depend
on the product's complexity.
Rack-Mount
 Custom rack mount
enclosures are designed to be mounted in a standard electronics rack or
console. This configuration is used for many scientific, telecommunication,
and instrumentation applications. The front panel is typically metal or
aluminum. The rear part of the enclosure is usually metal, with ventilation
slots for cooling. The price for a rack mount solution varies with the
design complexity and the construction material. Design cycle and lead
time also depend on the product's complexity.
Total Enclosure
The
total enclosure is designed to be a stand-alone display product typically
offering some degree of protection against dust, dirt, and moisture. This
configuration is generally used for process control and machine control
applications. The enclosure can be metal, aluminum, or stainless steel.
This is typically the most expensive enclosure solution; much of the cost
stems from the display and electronics' cooling requirements. Designs
can be complex, and development may require considerable lead time.
