In a true self-service

by 4 p.m. Instead, touch-based public access kiosks provide on-demand,
"one-on-one" attention to users, positioning the government
as an enabler rather than a regulator. In a networked environment, "client"
services can easily be delivered via touch-enhanced workstations in libraries,
the post office, other government offices, or even in high-traffic areas
such as shopping malls. Other applications—such as driver testing
at the DMV, fingerprinting in high-security areas and point-of-sale (POS)
systems in restaurants used by military personnel—are also popular.
Touch holds great promise for easy, accurate, secure voting, and systems
are already being used. Local officials can easily conduct surveys and
solicit local opinions safely and securely from a public-access kiosk—unattended,
if required—with touchscreens that are resistant to public abuse,
such as scratches or dirt. In fact, no matter how busy or demanding the
